pH Balancing with Apple Cider Vinegar

By Dr. Laura Thompson

Apple Cider Vinegar
There are many benefits from taking a daily dose of apple cider vinegar, an old folk remedy. Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar can help alleviate many ailments. It's delicious, rich in vital nutrients, and truly a valuable item in your pantry.

ACV has been used for thousands of years not only for health reasons, but also as a cleansing agent to remove bacteria, germs, odors, and even stains and spots. Apple cider vinegar breaks down fat, mucous and phlegm in the body. This can improve the health and function of the liver, bladder, and kidneys.

Take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey in a cup of water for ailments such as arthritis, insomnia, cramps, high blood pressure, and food poisoning. Apple cider vinegar can help to:

  • normalize the body's acid/alkaline balance
  • cleanse the digestive tract
  • aid in the removal of calcium deposits from joints and blood vessels without affecting the calcium in the bones and teeth
  • replenish potassium in the body

Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and/or fermented foods like sauerkraut and kim chi (also called cultured or fermented foods) are an integral part of a healthy diet in many cultures. These foods are rich in natural enzymes which aid in digestion. They also help to restore the natural balance of healthy bacteria in the gut by creating a perfect environment for those healthy bacteria to grow, all while keeping yeast, like candida in check!

A great and simple salad dressing consists of 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 4 teaspoons of flax or olive oil. Add your favorite spices and shake well.

Now, if you're tempted to go to the cupboard and take a swig of apple cider vinegar, prepare yourself. It's very potent and can actually erode the enamel on your teeth if it's not diluted. However, you can swish it around in your mouth to combat oral thrush or a gum infection. Just make sure to rinse your mouth and teeth very well afterwards.
