What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is a harmful amino acid your body forms as a by-product of the digestion of certain foods (like well-done steak, fish, and dairy and other protein sources.) and is thought to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease
 
Your body has a built-in defense mechanism against homocysteine buildup--it transforms it into a harmless substance called cystathionine, which is flushed from the body in the urine.
 
Elevated homocysteine has been detected in 30% with coronary vascular disease, 42% of patients with cerebrovascular disease and 28% with peripheral vascular disease. Homocysteine has been found to be up to 40 times more predictive than cholesterol in assessing cardiovascular disease risk. 

Medical studies have proven that elevated homocysteine:
  • Induces oxidative stress and impairs the ability of blood vessels to expand and contract
  • Injures the inner lining of blood vessel walls
    Increases blood clot formation which can lead to heart attack or stroke
  • Is a risk factor for depression and cancer
  • Is found in diabetic neuropathy
  • Is indicated in cirrhosis of the liver
  • Is predictive of cervical cancer
  • Is broadly related to a higher risk of heart, brain and all blood vessel disease
  • Is a strong risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's disease
  • Occurs in erectile dysfunction
  • Is associated with serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and macular degeneration  

Why Homocysteine Levels Rise
Homocysteine levels are responsive to a wide range of influences. They rise naturally as we age. Genes also play a large role in the body's metabolism of homocysteine. However, there are many lifestyle factors that can also cause homocysteine levels to rise. For instance, excessive coffee and alcohol consumption have been shown to increase homocysteine levels.
 
Taking folic acid isn't the only thing you can do to reduce blood homocysteine--Vitamins B12 and B6 are also critical for the metabolism of this killer amino acid. When you cook steak, prepare it as rare as you can enjoy it, because the closer to "well done" it is, the more homocysteine you'll produce in digesting it.
